I have started attending a local healthcare center here in Coastside. Twice a week we have physical therapy (PT). These PT sessions do not replace my PT sessions at my HMO on the other side of our coastal mountains. Those sessions are considered to be therapeutic, or "improving," sessions, while the local sessions are considered to be more "maintenance" sessions to boost what I learn at my HMO.
So do the local sessions help? Yes. Indeed they do. For one thing, the center is nearby, which means that I do not have to ride the bus or the car over the hills to get to therapy. Rather, I just take a local van to the Coast Center here in my hometown.
For another thing, the therapist at the local program is just great! She "speaks to me" in a way that I can really connect with.
I am a firm believer that healing involves healing in four areas -- all at the same time if possible. The days at the Coast Center address all four areas.
A typical day at the local Coast Center goes like this: We all arrive At 10 a.m. and start our day with coffee, morning snacks, and visiting -- addressing our needs to maintain social health. Next, we have a group class with the therapist. Then, after a quite tasty homemade meal for lunch, we have some afternoon sessions as well as a chance to work as individuals with the therapist of the day
Two days a week,we have physical therapy.
Yesterday was my second physical therapy day. In the afternoon the therapist used our together time to work on gluteal muscles to help to develop a good gait as well as good standing balance. Then she asked me to stand at the beginning of the balance bar aisle.
Her next instruction was, "Walk to the other end. Think only about how it felt to walk before your stroke. Walk on your 'pre-stroke legs.' You can rest your hands on top of the bars to help with your balance."
And I did. I "walked" from the beginning of the balance aisle to the end. It felt great--just as it did in my dream when I went walking with the Virgin Mary.
If my little condo and checkbook had the space, I would order a set of home balance bars right this minute.
And then I would walk, walk, walk.
