In his wonderful book, Full Catastrophe Living, author Jon Kabat-Zinn urges the reader to start by taking stock of what he or she has and not what was lost.
Tough advice for the stroke survivor when "what was lost" organizes the whole recovery process, starting with therapy and impacting many, if not all, activities of daily living. What's worse, many stroke survivors, in the blink of an eye, go from normal to impaired without warning. A "life earthquake" shakes the foundation of their very being.
Dr. Kabat's advice echoes that of millionaire J.Paul Getty who urged, "In times of crisis, do not panic. Instead, marshall all your resources."
